A Day to Remember??

Posted May 25th, 2010 by John

Some time early tomorrow morning (Wed, May 26, 2010), the US National Debt Clock will strike $13,000,000,000,000  (that’s 13 trillion dollars) — quite a milestone. This number is so big it’s really hard to relate to it.

But.. there is one figure to which most of us can relate: the rate at which our debt is accumulating — per second:

$48153   per second

So what could you do with $48k per second??

  • Buy a brand new, top of the line SUV  every second
  • Pay for most of a full year’s tuition (including room and board) at a top-of-the-line private university (i.e. Stanford, Harvard, USC, etc)  every second
  • Pay off the balance on the average US mortgage  every 3.7 seconds
  • Invest $1M dollars in a high-tech startup  every 20.7 seconds

And, keep in mind, this waste is accumulating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There are 31,536,000 seconds in a year.

Oh… and one more thing: that $48k/sec rate is accelerating.
